Find Out More About C. Michael Kelly, M.D.
1. The knee is made of 3 articulating surfaces.

A. The Medial Compartment

B. The Lateral Compartment

C. The Patello-Femoral Compartment

2. When a Total Knee is done, all 3 compartments of the knee are resurfaced or replaced. This is needed if all compartments are significantly worn and symptomactic. The total knee is therefore a tri-compartmental replacement.
3. If only one compartment of your knee is significantly involved, then you may only need to replace that one compartment. When that is done you have a Uni-Compartmental replacement. Only replacing the part of the knee that hurts.
